Reader Question on Canine Arthritis and Human Glucosamine/Chondroitin supplements

Can human glucosemine condroiton with the same milligrams as the dog version be given to my yellow lab?

Veterinarian Suggestion regarding using glucosamine chondroitin for an arthritic dog

Hi Gloria,

Yes, human products can be given to dogs. In general, I recommend that dogs receive approximately 500 mg per 25 pounds body weight of glucosamine and 400 mg per 25 pounds body weight of chondroitin sulfate per day.

In my experience, there is a lot of individual variation with regards to which particular formulation will work best, so feel free to try one product for a month or so, and if you are not impressed with the results, try another.

Good luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM

As a reminder, It's important to consult with a veterinarian before giving your dog any new supplements or medications, as they can have individual sensitivities and dosage requirements.

The appropriate dosage of glucosamine chondroitin supplements for a 90-pound dog would depend on the specific product and concentration. It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage or consult with a veterinarian for guidance on the appropriate dosage for your dog.

Overdosing on these supplements can lead to gastrointestinal upset, so it's important to use caution when administering them.
