Reader Question: Concerned about Blood in Puppy Stool

My puppy is 5 months old and has had his 1st set of shots. Last week he had a temp of 105.8 and was lethargic, did not want to eat or drink. Took him to the vet immediately and they tested for parvo( didn't have it) gave him IV fluids under the skin because he was dehydrated and another shot of medication for dehydration.

I took him home and fed him chicken and rice. The fever is gone he is back to being playful and wagging his tail BUT there is still small amount of blood and diarrhea plus when you pick him up under his stomach he will whimper.

What could this be and should I take him back to the vet?

Suggestion from our Vet

Hello,

I cannot say exactly what is going on with your puppy without the opportunity to examine him, but it is possible that the symptoms you describe are simply related to the resolution of his disease process.

As long as he continues to eat and be playful and these symptoms are getting better rather than worse, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. But, if his condition deteriorates at any time, get him back in to your veterinarian immediately.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
