Dog Rubbing Eye

by Brett

I have a Great Dane. I have recently noticed that my dog is continuously rubbing his eye and has erratic blinking of the right eye. I have tried to thoroughly flush the eye and use natural eye drops to attempt to clear whatever reason exists for him to continue to rub his eye!

His behavior and attention or sight seems undiminished from it and it is not building up mucus in any excessive fashion! Following my flushing I did conduct minor investigation over the eye and did not notice any build up or redness! Only thing I can think is maybe to attempt to use some anti-biotic eye drops, but mo ideas on the causes of this!

If you have any ideas or suggestions on a cure etc. Please email me with suggestions on particular drops to use!

Thanks for your time and help!

Vet Suggestion Dog Eye Irritation Treatment

Hello Brett,

I don’t recommend that you attempt to treat your dog’s irritated eye without first consulting a veterinarian. The wrong type of treatment or delaying appropriate treatment could put your dog’s sight at risk. Likely causes for your dog’s condition include a wound or ulcer on the surface of the eye, foreign material lodged under an eyelid, infection on or within the eye, glaucoma (abnormally high pressure within the eye), or poor tear production.

Your veterinarian will need to perform a thorough ophthalmic exam and probably run a couple of tests to get to the bottom of the problem and prescribe appropriate treatment.

Good luck!
