Reader Question: What Types Of Parasites Cause Dog's To Vomit?

What kind of parasite would cause a 6 month old puppy to vomit after drinking or eating? She does this a lot. She was wormed again a month and a half ago with Nemex-2. She has also staggered a few times in the last 2 weeks.

Veterinarian Responds To Reader Question Regarding Types Of Parasites That Cause Canine's To Vomit

Hello,

The best way to determine if a gastrointestinal parasite (and if so, which kind) is to blame for your puppy’s vomiting is to bring a fecal sample in to your veterinarian’s office for analysis. My top rule outs would be roundworms, hookworms, coccidia, and Giardia, though I’d also check for whipworms and tapeworms. As long as you followed the dosing instructions, Nemex-2 should have taken care of any hookworms and roundworms your puppy had, but that medication wouldn’t have had any effect on the other parasites that I mentioned.

It is also possible that parasites are not to blame for your dog’s symptoms. Bacterial or viral infections, food intolerances or allergies, developmental abnormalities, foreign body ingestions, and more could all have the same effect. If you haven’t brought this problem to your veterinarian’s attention, you should do so.
