Stop Canine Dandruff

Reader Question: How do I stop my dog’s dandruff?

My Rottie is 13 months old and since I changed her food from Blue Puppy Food to the Blue Adult food, she has been scratching and licking all the time. When I give her Benadryl she stops. I noticed today while giving her a really good brushing before bathing her in oatmeal soap that she has dandruff really bad.

What should I buy to help relieve the dry skin?

Thanks,

John

Vet’s recommended products to stop canine dandruff

Hi John,

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you switched back to the Blue puppy food for a couple of weeks. If her symptoms disappear, you have just diagnosed her with a dog allergy to an ingredient that is in the Blue Adult food formula, but not in the Blue Puppy Food formula. Compare the ingredient lists to see what is different and then pick an adult food that doesn’t contain the potential triggers.

You can also try a topical product like Dermoscent or Douxo Shampoo, but if that doesn’t do the trick, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

Good luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
