Reader Question: Anemia and Dog Blood Transfusions

My dog has been diagnosed with severe anemia and may need a transfusion. What will happen if she does not get a transfusion?

Veterinarian Response:

Hi Tim,

The answer to your question about what will happen if your dog does not get a transfusion depends on the severity of her anemia and its underlying cause.

If her anemia is very bad and worsens before other treatment has a chance to improve the situation, she could die. On the other hand, if her red blood cell count is not terribly low and responds quickly to treatment, she may be able to survive without the transfusion.

Talk to your veterinarian about your concerns. He or she is in the best (only) position to determine whether or not a transfusion is absolutely necessary.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
