How to Choose an Anti Barking Device

" An anti barking device works by emitting a sound at a decibel level that is uncomfortable for dogs. It is triggered when a dog starts barking. Devices include collars that are worn by the barking dog or a device that works within 25 feet of the dog."

There are several types of devices described in the table below that are made to stop barking such as a stop barking dog collar, indoor room device or even an outdoor device.

Most studies show that all devices work some showing preference for citronella spray. Other studies demonstrate that the devices do not increase your dog's anxiety level.

The collars should not be used for long continuous periods of time since your dog might become used to the stimulus used to deter the barking. Best approach is also to provide some type of rewarding behavior such as affection, petting or having your dog sit or providing a treat to reinforce the positive action.

Also, be sure to use the collars in multiple locations since your dog might associate the stimulus with only that room or only a certain type of stranger.

Collars are not indicated for use for separation anxiety. Here behavior modification approaches are better such as distracting your dog with a treat filled Kong Toy when you leave the house. Start with short periods of absence (30 seconds, then 3 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.). Alternate toys and number of toys to keep it interesting.
