Reader Question: Can A Dog Feces Cause Another Dog to Get Sick?

Can my dog get diseases from smelling another dogs waste?

Vet Answers Reader Question On Contaminated Dog Feces

Hello,

It is not likely that a dog would catch a disease simply by smelling another dog’s waste. Most diseases that are transmitted through the feces are transmitted via a fecal-oral route, meaning that dogs have to ingest a small amount of feces.

That said, the difference between a dog smelling and potentially stepping in and the licking feces from its fur is not that great, which is of the reason why cleaning up after our dogs and routine fecal exams and/or deworming are so important.
