Picture Dog Hives

This site has really helped me understand whats going on with our boxer. A year ago on New Years day, he had hives and was lethargic. We rushed him to the "animal ER" in a nearby city. He had gotten in to who knows what that he was allergic to and was toxic to him. After 3 days he came home.

Yesterday he started with the hives, but seemed okay other than swollen ears. I was glad to read that the ears, not the throat, like humans, swell when having an allergic reaction.

I started him on benedryl and it's helping. Since reading this website, I gave him a bath to get rid of the allergen.

Now to find the culprit.

.....Thanks.

Hives
by: SherryAnonymous

My 4 month old boxer has broke out in hives. From head to tail. I was told that her father had a reaction to fish oil. I have had her since 7weeks old. My husband started her on a puppy vitamin, l looked and it contains fish oil. Not certain what the cause is yet. Most foods contain fish oil. We have Ben feeding her blue buffalo since day one and not until now no problems. Just thought I would mention the fish oil. It is in almost every food out there except for Purina which is bottom shelve but it was the only food her father could handle. Just started Benadryl hope this helps till morning, then the vet.

bee sting?
by: Anonymous

My 2 year old lab/boxer Penny developed hives last night and we gave her children's benadryl right away, since being a new doggy mom, I freaked out. Didn't know if it was from some cake she got into that had lime filling, or if she got stung by a bee. Was a bit better in the morning but didn't start getting much better until I gave her some adult benadryl (hidden in doggie treats!). Of course now she's been scratching and her front legs are almost raw. I'll try that cool bath and some hydrocortisone cream and that might give her some relief.

Boxer mix with hives
by: Barbara

Our Boxer mix Missy came down with hives today. After doing a lot of research on the matter, we found that Benadryl is the name of the cure! I've given her 2 25 mg pills within the last 6 hours, and the swelling has already gone down a lot! I read that it can be caused by a variety of things, one of them being rolling around in something they're allergic to. After thinking hard on that one, I did remember that she rolled in some straw for the very first time in her life last night. I'm guessing that's what must have caused it.

Stuffy has hives
by: Cass

My staffy also got hives both yesterday as well as 2nite. I have found the culprit, schmackos. It's really weird, she absolutely loves them & has never had a reaction before. I certainly won't be buying them anymore.
