Cause of a Dog with Hacking Cough: Reader Question, Vet Response

by Thompson
(Tennessee)

My Morkie is 2 years old. She coughs in the morning a few times, every morning. It is a simple hacking noise, almost as though she is clearing her throat. She also does this 3-4 times per week at random in the day. What is this type of cough is this associated with?

Suggestion From Our Veterinarian

Hi Thompson,

Coughing as you describe can be associated with a number of conditions including a collapsing trachea, chronic bronchitis, inhaled foreign bodies, heartworm disease, lungworm, heart enlargement, irritants in the environment, infections, and more.

It would certainly be best to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Early diagnosis usually leads to an improved response to treatment and could, at the very least, help prevent the problem from worsening in the future.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
