Causes of An Enlarged Dog Stomach

Reader Question: What Can Cause My Dog's Enlarged Stomach

My dog is a 9 year old Pitbull that has had all of the regular shots. Now he has an enlarged stomach.

There is no vomiting and the stools are regular. He can have acute gas along with some weight gain. My dog also sometimes no energy.

Is there an over the counter medicine or any other home remedy I could try.

Veterinarian Suggestion for Treating an Enlarged Dog Stomach

Hi,

The first step in treating a health problem is diagnosing its cause. The list of conditions that can cause abdominal enlargement and the other symptoms you describe is quite long and ranges from the relatively benign (e.g., weight gain) to extremely serious (e.g., abdominal tumors, liver disease, heart failure, Cushing’s disease).

Your best option is to make an appointment with your dog’s veterinarian for a physical exam. He or she can then recommend the best way to proceed.
