Reader Question: Dog Cold, Allergies or Another Problem?

My 4-pound Maltese in 1 week has lost 1 pound, has clear white mucus from the nose, sneezing, a slight cough, no energy, and showed these signs after his first rabies and distemper vaccines.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Is this a cold or a dog allergy?

Vet Suggestion on Differences Between Dog Cold and Allergy Symptoms
by: Dr. Jennifer Coates, DVM

Hi Kim,

The symptoms you describe in your Maltese could point to a serious illness. I am particularly worried that the dog has lost one-quarter of his body weight in one week. Please take him to see your veterinarian immediately.

The doctor will need to perform a physical examination and probably run some diagnostic tests to diagnose what is going on and determine the best way to treat it.

The longer your dog’s condition continues without treatment, the harder (and more expensive) it becomes to make him better.

Regards,

Jennifer Coates, DVM

We adopted a Bishon Frise approx. 10 years old from Humane Society November 18th, 2013 that has the same symptoms as this little dog mentioned.
Humane Society tried all kinds of test and antibiotics, even pulled top canine teeth that another vet said could be the problem from infection.

He still coughs, has mucus coming out of nostrils and sleeps all day. Sad no one can find out what his real problem is so he can have well days in his little life.
