Reader Question: Over the Counter products to relieve dog cold symptoms

Our dachshunds have been sneezing and acting like they have a congested nose. What OTC medicines can we use or can we use a humidifier to help relieve their symptoms.

Vet Suggestion for Over The Counter Dog Cold Relief

Hello Missy,

Dogs do not get the same cold virus that people do, but they can come down with other illnesses that have similar symptoms.

As long as your dachshunds are active, eating well, and otherwise seem to feel fine, you can try nursing them through this on your own. Keep their noses free of discharge by wiping them as needed with a warm washcloth. Encourage them to eat and drink normally, and if it seems to help, put them in a steamy bathroom (run a hot shower) for 10 minutes or so twice a day.

If at any time they appear to be getting worse rather than better, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
