Eye Redness After Playing With Another Puppy

Eye Redness After Playing With Another Puppy

My 8 month old puppy was playing with his brother pup a bit rough and then we noticed a little redness in his eye at the outer corner. The next day there was some discharge and a little bit of greenish color and minor swelling under the eye.

Editor Suggestion Red Puppy Eye After Playing with Another Pup

Hi Rachel,

Sorry to hear about your puppy's eye condition.

It is possible that the rough play with the other puppy resulted in a scratch on your puppy's eye. Scratches on the surface of the eye, known as corneal abrasions or corneal ulcers (open sores on the cornea), can cause redness, discharge, and swelling. If the scratch is deep or becomes infected, it can lead to more severe symptoms and complications.

Other possible causes are:

Conjunctivitis which is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin tissue that covers the white part of the eye. It can be caused by allergies, irritants, or bacterial or viral infections or a foreign object in the eye, which may have entered your puppy's eye, causing irritation and the subsequent symptoms.

It's important to have your puppy's eye evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the extent of the injury and to receive appropriate treatment. The vet may recommend using eye drops or ointments to help with the healing process and prevent infection.

Please keep us up to date on your pup's condition.
