Supplement or Vitamin

Do you recommend a prebiotic, probiotic or supplement to combat my Golden Retriever's yeast problems on his skin and in his ears. I've been giving him Salmon oil on his food every day but seems to be not enough.

Editor Suggestion for Treating Yeast Infection

Hi Michelle,

Sorry to hear about your Golden's yeast skin problems.

While we cannot make specific recommendations regarding your pet's health without a thorough examination by a veterinarian, we can provide you with some general information that might help.

Yeast infections in dogs can be caused by a variety of factors, including a weakened immune system, allergies, or hormonal imbalances. While prebiotics, probiotics, and supplements may be helpful in managing yeast infections in some cases, it's important to determine the underlying cause of your Golden Retriever's yeast problems before considering any specific treatment.

Prebiotics and probiotics can be beneficial for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, which can help support overall immune system health. They can also help reduce inflammation and improve nutrient absorption, which may help alleviate some of the symptoms of yeast infections.

Supplements such as fish oil, which contains omega-3 fatty acids, can help support skin and coat health and may help reduce inflammation associated with yeast infections. However, it's important to note that supplements should not be used as a substitute for proper veterinary care, and you should always consult with your veterinarian before starting any new treatment or supplement regimen for your pet.

In addition to supplements, there are several other measures you can take to help manage your Golden Retriever's yeast infections, including regular grooming to keep the skin and coat clean and dry, using hypoallergenic shampoos and conditioners, and addressing any underlying allergies or hormonal imbalances with the guidance of a veterinarian.

It's important to work closely with your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of your Golden Retriever's yeast problems and develop an appropriate treatment plan. They can provide you with more specific recommendations regarding the use of prebiotics, probiotics, or supplements, as well as other treatments that may be necessary.

All the best to you and your dog,
