Reader Question and Suggestions From Our Veterinarian

I have a mix pit/lab he's only 9 months old, but he has these bumps on his top and bottom lips. They look similar to pimples but there is a green puss that comes out of the bump, and it only seems to get worse. I've been putting peroxide on them and it seems to help a little but he's got so many wrinkles on his mouth that I can't keep the moisture out.

Please help!

Veterinarian Response

Hi Carly,

Many health problems can cause pus-filled bumps to develop around a dog’s lips. Your veterinarian will need to examine your puppy and maybe perform some simple tests like cytology to diagnose yeast and bacterial infections and skin scrapings to identify mange mites. The good news is that, particularly in young dogs, appropriate treatment is usually straightforward and very successful.

The skin wrinkles that you describe can be a breeding ground for infections, so it may become important for you to keep them clean and dry to prevent recurrent problems. Products like DOUXO® Chlorhexidine PS + Climbazole Pads are very effective for this type of routine, preventative care.

Best of luck,
Jennifer Coates, DM
