Reader Question: Treating Dog Dry Flaky Skin

I have a mixed breed 41 lb dog that has really bad flaky skin on his back toward the back end. I have tried dog shampoos with oatmeal, etc. but none work. I have heard you can put a tablespoon of olive oil in their dry food to help.

Does this work?

Suggestion From Our Veterinarian

Hi Steve,

Adding olive oil to your dog's diet will have little if any effect on his skin. Salmon or flaxseed oil, which are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids, are better options. However, adding anything to your dog's diet won't be helpful if he is suffering from parasites, an infection, or another potentially serious skin condition.

A veterinarian can tell you what might be going on with a physical examination and possibly some simple diagnostic tests. Once a diagnosis is reached, the doctor can make recommendations regarding what form of treatment has the best chance of clearing up your dog's skin.
