Puppy with Soft Stool, Blood and Mucus

by Rochella

My puppy has a soft stool with minimal fresh blood and mucus. She is 1 1/2 months old. Last February7 I gave her a 5 in 1 vaccine. Last February 11, my father gave her mebendazole. I do not know how many ml.

After 4 days, I noticed her whimpering frequently. She cannot sleep, she has lost her appetite and it seems she is having stomachache.

Then she passes soft stools with minimal fresh blood and mucus..What could have been wrong??

Please help.

Vet Suggestion for Puppy with a soft stool that contain mucus and blood

Hi Rochella,

The list of possible causes for your puppy’s soft stools that contain mucus and blood is quite long and includes some potentially very serious diseases including parvo virus, distemper, and intestinal parasitism. One dose of a vaccine and dewormer does not offer much in the way of protection against these conditions. Puppies need to receive multiple vaccinations and dewormings up until they are approximately four months old.

Please take your dog in to see a veterinarian ASAP. Puppies can quickly become very ill from conditions that might barely affect an adult dog. The doctor will perform a physical exam, take a complete history, run a fecal examination, and perhaps recommend other tests (a complete blood cell count, a blood chemistry panel, parvo testing, etc.) based on his or her initial findings.

Best of luck,

Jennifer Coates, DVM
